At a panel discussion organized by ABB on October 14, EU policymakers and industry leaders discussed how Europe can reconcile competitiveness with circularity in the transition to a sustainable sconomy. The discussion highlighted the need to adapt regulations for both B2B and B2C sectors and warned that fragmented or one-size-fits-all policies could hamper recycling and reuse efforts.

Speakers emphasized that a circular system – through reuse, refurbishment, and recycling – is essential for economic security, competitiveness, and decarbonization. Karolina D’Cunha from the European Commission stressed that rducing resource dependency increases resilience and lowers costs for producers. MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen stressed that cooperation across the business value chain and harmonized legislation are key to expanding circular market.

Experts, including Heather Grabbe from Bruegel, noted that volatile global commodity prices make efficient use of resources a strategic necessity, while Erich Labuda from ABB showed  how industrial innovation can lead to low-carbon and competitive growth.

Participants generally agreed that Europe’s circular economy must be commercially viable, supported by clear incentives, consistent legislation, and cross-sector cooperation to ensure long-term sustainability and competitiveness.
